The Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering (ABC) at Politecnico di Milano is a research and education department working on architecture, construction and the built environment. Its activities address major challenges affecting the construction sector, including energy and ecological transition, technological innovation and digitalisation, risk mitigation, social inclusion and sustainable development.
The Department’s research infrastructure includes the ABCLab Laboratory System, a network of specialised laboratories supporting education, research, technological experimentation and innovation in the construction sector. Within this network, the BEE Lab (Building FaçadE PerformancE Laboratory) focuses development, testing and validation of innovative building envelope technologies. Research activities focus on dry assembly construction systems, high-performance façades, building performance assessment, digital modelling and performance monitoring.
Facilities and capabilities
- Sensorized Living Lab office space for long-term monitoring, indoor environmental quality assessment, and occupancy behavior investigation
- Fully sensorized real-life test chambers for full-scale, in-use performance assessment of building components
- Thermoflowmetry, thermography, surface/interstitial temperature and humidity monitoring, and ventilation performance assessment
- Acoustic performance testing of building envelope, and photometric testing of glazed surfaces, coatings, and shading systems
- Blower Door testing and durability assessment of advanced façade materials and systems
- Real-time indoor air quality monitoring, including CO₂, particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants
- Building performance simulation and digital modelling, integrating BIM, Building Energy Modelling (BEM) and Digital Twin approaches
This comprehensive, evidence-based measurement and verification approach bridges the gap between laboratory-scale research and real-world performance, driving the development of safe, healthy, and highly optimized building envelope technologies.
