The Façade Design and Engineering Group at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) works on sustainable and resource-efficient building envelopes through data-driven computational design and performance-based design evaluation. It contributes to the Building Envelope Alliance through expertise in AI for façade design and engineering, computational façade design, human-centred façade design, façade engineering, virtual prototyping and web-based design tools.

The research focuses on the design and engineering of adaptive and intelligent building envelopes, building-integrated photovoltaics and zero-energy buildings. Researchers combine artificial intelligence, predictive control, web app development, physically based visualisation and human–façade interaction studies to support façade decision-making and develop personalised indoor environments that improve comfort, experience and well-being. 

Facilities and capabilities

  • Media Lab equipped with a full VR/MR/AR rig for immersive visualisation and human-centred evaluation 
  • FACETS Lab (Facade, Architectural Computation, Engineering, Technology, and Systems) for adaptive façade design and engineering, computational design and AI 
  • Structural Lab equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for testing concrete structures and assessing structural performance 

This integrated research infrastructure links immersive environments, façade systems research and structural testing to support the development of high-performance, sustainable and human-centred building solutions.
